BALLUSTRADE

A balustrade is a row of repeating balusters — small posts which support the upper rail of a railing. Staircases and porches often have balustrades.

COLUMN, CAPITAL

A column is an upright pillar or post. Columns may support a roof or a beam, or they may be purely decorative. The lower portion of a column is called the base. The upper portion of a column is called the capital. The area which the column supports is called the entablature.

COPING

Coping is the capping or covering of a wall.

CORBEL

A corbel is a bracket composed of a single projecting block, or of several graduated projecting courses of masonry, providing a ledge.

CORNICE

A cornice is horizontal molded projection that completes a building or wall; or the upper slanting part of an entablature.

CRESTS, SHIELDS, MEDALLION

Crests, shields and medallions are ornamental objects usually fixed above the ridge of a pitched roof.

DATE STONE

A datestone is typically an embedded stone with a date or other information carved into it.

FASCIA

Fascia is a horizontal piece covering the joint between the top of a wall and the projecting eaves of a roof.

HARDSCAPING

Hardscape refers to landscaping structures constructed from inorganic materials that work toward sculpting the overall landscaping design. These structures include many things such as precast benches, seat walls, fountains, millstones, curbing, and etc.

KEYSTONE

A keystone is the architectural piece at the crown of a vault or arch which marks its apex, locking the other pieces into position.

LINTEL

A lintel is a horizontal beam or stone bridging an opening, most often a door.

PANELS

Panels are flat or sculptured areas that are part of a larger structure.

PIERS AND CAPS

Piers are solid masonry supports, distinct from a column. They may vary from a simple square shape to a compound pier, which can have several shafts, either attached or detached.

SIGNAGE

Signage can be provided with incised cast-in lettering, sandblasted lettering, and can also include painting, if desired.

SILLS

Sills are used in conjunction with side pieces to form a full window surround.

STATUARY

Statuary, such as this life-sized statue installed high in a building end wall and that honors Brother Andre at Notre Dame, are available in cast stone.

SURROUNDS

Cast Stone window and door surrounds complement stone walls of buildings and residences.

TREADS, RISERS

Steps are composed of the tread and riser. The tread is the part of the stairway that is stepped on and the riser is the vertical portion between each tread on the stair.
